A plain page, a counter that starts at zero and a single button.
- Opens with. A notice about phones
- First button. Make Paperclip
- Saving. Two slots
First light at the door
The address opens on a notice saying the web version isn’t meant for phones, with a link to a mobile version for iPhone and Android. A second link on the same screen carries on to the web version.
Past it there is a welcome line, a paperclip total and one button, Make Paperclip.
What the evening holds
The labels on the page hint at the pace: wire in inches, a price per clip, public demand, a marketing level, and machines called AutoClippers and MegaClippers with a cost beside each.
Everything runs on numbers, so a sitting is mostly watching counters and choosing what to buy next.
Packing up
The page’s controls include Save Slot 1 and Save Slot 2, matching load buttons and a button labelled Reset all progress. Ending a sitting means saving to a slot and remembering which one.
Margin notes
Next to the game there is a link to a gift shop with T-shirts, and the mobile version has its own links. Nothing in the page text asks for a sign-in.
Fits a certain reader
Anyone content with a page that is mostly buttons and figures, and happy to leave it ticking over while doing something else.
Screens and browsers
A laptop or desktop screen is the intended setup, going by the opening notice. The phone version lives behind the iPhone and Android links rather than in the browser page.
Make the first clip
Universal Paperclips runs on its own site, in a new tab. This page is only a set of notes.
